Your Role:

EMD Serono in Billerica, MA has an opening for a Senior Scientist.  In this role, you will be responsible for the hands-on execution of in vitro immunopharmacology studies that utilize human and murine immune cell assays to study the anti-tumor activity of novel immuno-oncology agents. The Senior Scientist will contribute to the execution of a research strategy focused on the evaluation of novel drug candidates for cancer immunotherapy. Through applied expertise in tumor immunology, the incumbent will be charged with characterizing the immunological mechanisms associated with treatment and the identification of potential biomarkers.


  • Drive early drug discovery projects in Immuno-Oncology by designing and conducting in vitro pharmacology studies using human and murine immune cell assays
  • Actively strengthen the cancer immunotherapy pipeline through championing internal projects and managing/supporting collaborations with external partners
  • Work in collaboration with other members of the department in designing human immunology models to test new immunomodulators also being tested in murine and other animal models
  • Improve, change, or adapt existing methods and techniques. Implement cutting edge technologies and methodologies to investigate immune cell function
  • Represent Immuno-Oncology as a member of multi-disciplinary Discovery Project Teams
  • Document all study results in the form of lab notebook reports and, as needed, contribute to the authorship of regulatory submission documents
  • Participate in authorship of scientific and/or patent publications
  • Facilitate productive interactions with other functions outside of Immuno-Oncology and stimulate cross-functional ideas for immunotherapeutic approaches
  • Follow and promote safety instructions and regulations according to Quality Management Standard


Who you are:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in Immunology, Cell Biology, or other related Scientific discipline with 1+ years’ experience in Immunology and/or Immuno-Oncology OR
  • Master’s degree in Immunology, Cell Biology, or other related Scientific discipline with 5+ years’ experience in Immunology and/or Immuno-Oncology OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in Immunology, Cell Biology, or other related Scientific discipline with 10+ years’ experience in  Immunology and/or Immuno-Oncology


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background in human cellular immunology, immune regulation, and immune metabolism, preferably in cancer immunotherapy, as evidenced by peer reviewed publications in top-tier journals, is highly desired
  • Familiarity with human and mouse tumor models and mechanisms of anti-tumor responses with strength in the analysis of the activity of human innate and adaptive populations and measuring anti-tumor effector lymphocyte responses
  • High proficiency with immuno-assays including flow cytometry, cytotoxicity assays, cytokine release assays, IncuCyte live cell imaging, etc.
  • Knowledge of IHC and pre-clinical biomarkers
  • Tissue culture: cell line and primary cell culture
  • Ability to conceptualize innovative ideas for immunotherapy and research assay tools
  • Ability to work within cross-functional team environments and provide input to various core teams to ensure project deliverables
  • Support publication and regulatory fillings as well as ensure compliance to all electronic records
  • Excellent communication, organization, presentation, and multitasking ability combined with the capacity to quickly adapt to project priorities to deliver data packages according to established timelines
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with people, internally and externally
  • Team oriented work ethic and ability to work in cross-functional teams
  • Capacity for providing intellectual input, creative insight and assisting in the design of project work-plans
  • Ability to work independently and as part of multidisciplinary project teams
