A career with EMD Serono is an ongoing journey of discovery: our 51,000 people are shaping how the world lives, works and plays through next generation advancements in healthcare, life science and performance materials. For more than 350 years and across the world we have passionately pursued our curiosity to find novel and vibrant ways of enhancing the lives of others. EMD Serono is a business of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany.

Your role:

At EMD Serono, the Supply Operations group, a core function that generates micrograms to grams of purified proteins, is seeking a motivated researcher to join our recombinant protein expression team. The Research Associate will be responsible for small and large scale expression of therapeutic and reagent proteins, primarily by transient transfection of mammalian cells lines, or from stable cell lines

  • Protein expression/production from mammalian cell cultures to support preclinical discovery research.  Cell lines include HEK, CHO and hybridomas.
  • Cell line maintenance and cell passage; Research cell banks creation.
  • Perform medium- to high-throughput transient gene expression in HEK and CHO cells
  • Generate stable mammalian cell lines: Perform stability studies and select highly expressing cell lines for cell banking and protein production.
  • Perform scale-up fed-batch bioreactor processes.  Evaluate and implement optimal feeding strategies to improve product yield, quality and purity.
  • Generate, manage, evaluate, and maintain critical data in a highly organized manner.  Provide reports and prepare scientific presentations as needed.  Write/revise SOPs and technical reports.
  • Focus on continuous process improvement and implement new technology/innovations wherever possible.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or related Science discipline; Associate’s degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or related Science discipline with 1+ year’s experience in mammalian cell culture operations, or HSD/equivalent with 5+ year’s’ experience in mammalian cell culture operations
  • 1+ year’s experience of mammalian cell culture and protein expression systems
  • 1+ year’s experience handling and manipulating mammalian cell lines aseptically

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or related Science discipline with 2+ year’s experience in mammalian cell culture and protein expression systems.
